San Nicholas

San Nicolas Island is the most remote in the Channel Islands and lies about 60 miles off the coast, approximately 22 square miles. It is military owned and operated.

It was one of 8 candidate sites to test the atomic bomb before White Sands NM was chosen.

San Nicolas Island was used for hunting whales, seals and otter.

Three lizards, a deer mouse and island fox are the only vertebrates and 3 endemic plant species.

Over 10 endemic molluscs are found here.

San Nicolas Islands most famous resident “Juana Maria” known as the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island was inadvertantly left on the island and lived there for 18 years. Her story varies but is told in the book Island of the Blue Dolphins.
